Springfield Speaker Frequently Asked Questions

The BEST part about a "Do-it-yourself" project is doing it yourself.

GENERAL QUESTIONS - (Our operators cannot help you to find the correct parts for your speaker)

Q - I have a technical question. How do I reach someone to ask my question?
A - Our operators cannot answer technical or install questions, so please do not call with them. Please click the link to our DIY Instructions page, or fully read and follow the instructions that came with your kit. You can also find a plethora of speaker repair videos and information through a simple search of Google or YouTube.

Q - How do I measure a speaker for a replacement foam or rubber surround?
A - See Illustration # 1

Q - How do I measure a voice coil?
A - Voice coils are measured by their INNER diameter. A 2.58" voice coil has an INNER diameter of 2.58".  A tape or ruler are not accurate enough to take this measurement. Measurements MUST be taken with a caliper. If you do not have one, borrow one, or visit somewhere like Harbor Freight where they are only $10.  If you are off by as little as a couple hundredths of an inch, the replacement will not work.

Q - Do you have replacement speakers?
A - We sell ONLY what is listed on our website. If you do not currently find it here, we do not currently offer it. We do not accept custom orders

Q - Do I need to replace the dust caps (Domes) if they are dented in?
A - Dust caps only function is to keep dust out of the voice coil gap. Unless they are loose or opened up a dent is merely cosmetic

Q - Can I send you my speaker to be repaired?
A - Unfortunately, no. We are not accepting new repair clients at this time

Q - Should I use foam or rubber for my replacement surrounds?
A - A general rule of thumb would be to replace your surrounds with the same material that they came with from the factory, as the cabinets were often designed around the type of surround used on the drivers

Q - I've never done this before; can you help me?
A - We do not provide that service at this time. Our operators cannot answer technical or install questions, so please do not call with them. Please click the link to our DIY Instructions page, or fully read and follow the instructions that came with your kit. If you are uncomfortable performing the repair yourself, you can find many quality repair facilities with a simple Google search

Q - What are shims, what are they for, and what is the price?
A - The shims are small thin sheets of plastic or paper (About the size and thickness of business cards) that you slip in between the coil former, and the pole piece to hold the coil centered in the gap while you install the foam. We do not recommend using them because it REQUIRES you to use a razor blade to remove your dust caps. This can damage the dust caps, or worse, the cones. Nonetheless, if you want them, all you have to do is ask when you checkout. They are FREE. Request them at checkout - DO NOT confuse them with gaskets. Gaskets are thick, pressed-paper rings that beautify the outer edge of some drivers

Q - How can I reach someone by phone for technical help or advice?
A - This is not a service that we provide any longer. We are merely a parts distributor and retailer. Google search is recommended

Q - I am near Springfield, MO. Can I come directly to your facility to buy speaker parts?
A - No. Our facility is not open to the public. We are entirely an ecommerce vendor at this time

Q - Where do I find that cable you use in the smartphone video?
A - Search our store for the term "CABLE-3.5mm" to find that cable. Note - the cable in the video is only for connecting a standard 3.5mm headphone jack to stereo RCA inputs on your stereo. An additional adapter may be required to use with your particular phone or tablet. We do not sell the additional adapters. You must then connect a standard speaker wire from one of the speaker outputs on your stereo directly to the driver to perform the repair. Always remove the driver from the cabinet before performing the repair. In the Smartphone video, the wire with alligator clips on it is just a piece of speaker wire to which the clips have been attached.

ORDER PROBLEMS

Q - I ordered a multiple-piece surround repair kit...why did I only received 1 surround?
A - First look closely at what you received. When we ship surrounds, they are stacked tightly, one inside the other, so what looks like only one will actually be multiples. If you have done that and have confirmed that you truly have only received 1 surround, please take a moment to review your order before contacting us. Look at the kit you ordered to make certain that you didn't accidentally order a 1-piece kit, as we DO sell them for many models. It your responsibility to make sure that you know what you are ordering. If you did accidentally order a 1-piece kit, you can order a 2nd foam by itself by locating it on the website and placing another order. If you have confirmed that you ordered correctly, and also confirmed that you only received 1 surround; please contact us at 800-397-9575 and follow the prompts.

Q - Why don't the parts I ordered fit my speaker?
A - Not all (In fact very few) models of speakers have exact replacement parts available any longer. Professional repair facilities have to take parts that are readily available and make them work. If your exact brand and exact model of speaker are listed as compatible on the listing from which you placed your order, then these are either the correct parts, or the closest parts available, and likely the only option to repair your speaker. If they don't look identical to the originals, that is irrelevant, as they are the ONLY parts you will find to make that specific repair. All of our listings are by specific brand and exact model number. If your brand and exact model number are not shown as compatible in the listing, then DO NOT ORDER. Additionally, every surround, spider, and coil listing contains the exact measurements of the product. It is your responsibility to confirm that you are ordering correctly BEFORE you order. All we do is send you what you ordered.

If you are still confident that you got the wrong items, then contact us at 800-397-9575 and follow the prompts

THE REPAIR PROCESS

Q - Do I have to remove the dust cap and use shims to replace the surrounds on my speaker?
A - You do not. In fact, we never recommend it unless absolutely necessary. Needlessly removing the dust caps can lead to damage to the caps and/or the cone itself. Even worse, you may accidentally cut the tiny lead wires that are contained under the cap. This will lead to a much more extensive repair. We recommend following the step-by-step instructions included in the kit, or found here - DIY Instructions Page. Even more than that, w recommend following the "Smartphone" video on that same page, as it will show you how to correctly use your smartphone or tablet as a tone generator to center the voice coil the way that many professional repair facilities do. Additionally, you can view the videos on the right side of this page.

Q - How do I center my voice coil?
A - Please see the answer to the previous question. Also see videos to the right of this page.

Q - How do I replace my foams?
A - Instructions are included in the kit. Additionally, you can click the above link to our DIY Instructions page, and/or view the videos on the right side of this page.

Q - Do I need to take my speaker out of the cabinet before I repair it?
A - 99 Times out of 100, the answer is yes. It is necessary to do the repair effectively.
